Adding effects and instruments to a project

To show a specific plug-in type

1.	In the Browser, click the PlugIns button to show the Plug-in Browser.

2.	Click the button that corresponds to the plug-in type you want to show:

Audio FX

MIDI FX

Instruments

ReWire

To select a plug-in layout

Click the PlugIns menu button and select the desired layout. Click Manage Layouts if you want to modify an existing layout or create a new layout.

To insert an effect in a track or bus

1.	In the Browser, click the PlugIns button to show the Plug-in Browser.

2.	Click the button that corresponds to the plug-in type you want to show:

Audio FX

MIDI FX

3.	Do one of the following:

To insert the effect in a specific location in the FX Rack. Drag the effect to the desired position in a track/bus FX Rack.

To insert the effect at the end of the FX Rack. Drag the effect to an empty track space in the Clips pane, or double-click the effect (only if the selected track type matches the effect type).

Valid destinations for audio effects

You can drag audio effects to the following locations:

Audio clip

Audio track inspector

Audio clip inspector

Audio track FX Rack

Audio Clip FX Rack

Audio Console strip

You can drag MIDI effects to the following locations:

To insert an effect into a clip’s FX Rack

1.	In the Browser, click the PlugIns button to show the Plug-in Browser.

2.	Click the button that corresponds to the plug-in type you want to show:

Audio FX

MIDI FX

3.	Drag the desired effect to a clip in the Clips pane.

To insert an instrument

1.	In the Browser, click the PlugIns button to show the Plug-in Browser.

2.	Click the Instruments button .

3.	Do one of the following:

To insert an instrument as a new Instrument track. Drag the desired instrument to an empty space in the Track view or Clips pane, or double-click the instrument.

To insert an instrument as a track effect. Drag the instrument to the desired track’s FX Rack, or drag the instrument to the desired track in the Clips pane.

Note: When you drag an instrument to an audio track or MIDI track, the following happens automatically: 4 If dropped on an audio track or inspector: add to Synth Rack, set audio track input and Synth automation accordingly. 4 If dropped on a MIDI track or inspector: add to Synth Rack, set MIDI track output and Synth automation accordingly.

You can drag instruments to the following locations:

MIDI track

Audio track inspector

MIDI track inspector

Audio Console strip

MIDI Console strip

Empty Track view

Empty Console view

Instrument track

To insert a ReWire device

1.	In the Browser, click the PlugIns button to show the Plug-in Browser.

2.	Click the ReWire button .

3.	Drag the ReWire device to the Track view or Clips pane.

The ReWire device is added to the Synth Rack and a new Instrument track is created.

To rename a plug-in

1.	In the Plug-in Browser, right-click the plug-in you want to rename.

2.	In the Set Properties dialog box, click the plug-in name, then type the new name.

3.	Click OK to close the Set Properties dialog box.

To assign a plug-in to an existing category

1.	In the Plug-in Browser, right-click the plug-in you want to assign to a category.

2.	In the Set Properties dialog box, click the small down arrow to open the drop-down list and select a category.

3.	Click OK to close the Set Properties dialog box.

To assign a plug-in to multiple categories

1.	In the Plug-in Browser, right-click the plug-in you want to assign to multiple categories.

2.	In the Set Properties dialog box, click the small down arrow to open the drop-down list and select a category.

3.	Click the button to add another category drop-down list, then select the next category. To remove the plug-in from an assigned category, click the button next to the category drop-down list. To remove the first category, clear the name from the drop-down list.

You can assign a plug-in to up to 5 different categories. For example, if your favorite equalizer plug-in has a spectrum analyzer, you could assign it to categories named EQ, Analyzer, and Favorites.

4.	Click OK to close the Set Properties dialog box.

To assign multiple plug-ins to the same category

1.	In the Plug-in Browser, select the plug-ins you want to assign to the same category. To select a range of adjacent plug-ins, click the first plug-in, then hold down the SHIFT key and click the last plug-in.

2.	Right-click any of the selected plug-ins.

3.	In the Set Properties dialog box, click the small down arrow to open the drop-down list and select a category.

4.	Click OK to close the Set Properties dialog box.

To create a new custom plug-in category

1.	In the Plug-in Browser, right-click the plug-in you want to assign to a new custom category.

2.	In the Set Properties dialog box, click the left side of the list control, then type a name for the new custom category.

3.	Click OK to close the Set Properties dialog box.

To delete a plug-in category

A category exists as long as at least one plug-in is assigned to the category.

To delete a category, re-assign its plug-ins to another category. Empty categories are automatically removed.

To revert a plug-in to its original stored category

1.	In the Plug-in Browser, right-click the plug-in you want to revert to its original category.

2.	In the Set Properties dialog box, click the small down arrow to open the drop-down list and select Reset Category.

3.	Click OK to close the Set Properties dialog box.
